Memory Verse: 1 Samuel 7:7-10
“And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.” 1 Samuel 3:19
Outline:
- His Character And Achievements
- Lessons From His Life
Introduction:
Samuel, the 13th judge of Israel was born of levitical parents (1 Chronicles 6:16, 25-28; 1 Samuel 1:1). The date of his birth was around 1070 BC. His mother was Hannah, a noble and good woman, married to Elkanah. The meaning of the Hebrew word translated Samuel is ‘God heard’ (1 Samuel 1:20). Being a Prophet and a Seer, he was the last and greatest of the Judges of Israel, who were chosen by God to rule over the people, and to save them in time of war and oppression.
His Character and Achievements
Samuel was a good and obedient man from childhood (1 Samuel 3:9-10). He was committed to serving God under the tutelage of Eli the Priest (1 Samuel 3:1a). He was available to hear from God at a time when the word and visions from the LORD became rare (1 Samuel 3:1-4). He was bold to declare God’s counsel to the house of Israel when they abandoned God (1 Samuel 7:3). He preferred the theocratic system to the monarchy demanded by the Israelites and he openly displayed his displeasure to the latter (1 Samuel 8:4-6). He was known as an intercessor who hears from God (1 Samuel 7:8-9; Psalm 99:6-7). He was a man well known for his integrity (1 Samuel 12:1-4).
In 1050 BC, the Lord instructed Samuel to anoint Saul as king over Israel (1 Samuel 9:15-17; 10:1). He defeated the Philistines and ended their forty-year oppression of Israel in 1030 BC (1 Samuel 7:13). Through this victory, the Israelites recovered their captured cities and had peace all the days of Samuel (1 Samuel 7:14). God gave him the opportunity to also anoint David as king in place of Saul (1 Samuel 15:28; 16:1, 13). The Lord did not let his word fail (1 Samuel 3:19). Prophet Samuel died in Ramah in 1011 BC and the whole nation mourned the loss of their beloved leader (1 Samuel 28:3).
Lessons From His Life
- The gift of Samuel to Hannah is a testimony to the fact that God knows the hearts of everyone and His promises never fail (1 Samuel 1:17-20).
- Samuel was a passionate, consistent and faithful lover of God and His righteousness (1 Samuel 3: 20; 8:4-6).
- God will always talk to His loved ones and reveal His secrets to them (1 Samuel 3:11).
- Faithfulness to God commands authority and great respect from people (1 Samuel 15:26-28; 16:4).
- We must choose to obey and honour God totally above men (1 Samuel 15:24, 32-33).
- God helps and supports His beloved (1 Samuel 7:10).
- Everyone must prepare for the day of accountability and reckoning because it is certain (1 Samuel 8:1-5; 12:3).
- He was referenced in Acts 3:24 and 13:20 by the Apostles as a Seer and a Prophet and numbered in the hall of fame in Hebrews 11:32.
Conclusion: God can make use of you like Samuel if you are willing and ready to pay the price.

Sunday School Teaching on the Life of Samuel
Topic: The Life and Lessons of Prophet Samuel
Memory Verse: 1 Samuel 3:19
“And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.”
Introduction (Let’s begin together):
Good morning, beloved of God! It’s another beautiful Sunday to gather as the family of Christ and grow in the knowledge of His Word. Today, we are looking at a mighty man of God—Prophet Samuel. Oh yes, Samuel wasn’t just a prophet; he was a judge, a priest, a national leader, and most importantly, a man who walked closely with God. From birth to death, his life was a testimony that God honours those who honour Him.
Now, I want you to imagine a young boy, growing up in the house of God—not playing around, not distracted—but listening to God’s voice, even when others couldn’t hear it. That was Samuel. And through today’s lesson, may the Lord stir in you the desire to live a life pleasing to Him, just like Samuel did. Amen?
I. His Character and Achievements
Let’s talk about who Samuel was and what he achieved for God and Israel.
🔹 He was obedient from childhood – Even as a young boy, when God called him, he said, “Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:10). How many young people today are willing to say that?
🔹 He served under Eli faithfully – He didn’t complain. He didn’t rebel. He humbled himself under a flawed leader, and God still lifted him.
🔹 He was God’s mouthpiece – When Israel turned their backs on God, Samuel was bold enough to speak truth—even when it was hard! (1 Samuel 7:3).
🔹 He preferred God’s rule (theocracy) over human kingship. When Israel demanded a king, it grieved him, but he still obeyed God and anointed Saul (1 Samuel 8:6-7, 10:1).
🔹 He was a prayer warrior – When Israel was attacked, they didn’t ask for soldiers—they ran to Samuel and said, “Don’t stop crying to the Lord for us!” (1 Samuel 7:8). And God answered him!
🔹 He was known for his integrity – When he stepped down as leader, he asked the whole nation: “Whose ox have I taken? Whom have I cheated?” And they all said, “You’ve done no wrong!” (1 Samuel 12:3-4). What a legacy!
🔹 He defeated the Philistines through God’s power – After years of oppression, Samuel led Israel in repentance and prayer, and God thundered from heaven to scatter their enemies (1 Samuel 7:10). Hallelujah!
🔹 He anointed kings – He anointed both Saul and David as kings—because God trusted him with destiny decisions (1 Samuel 10:1; 16:13).
II. Lessons From His Life
Let’s bring it home, children of God. What can we learn from this great man of God?
✅ 1. God hears and remembers
Samuel’s name means “God heard.” His very life was an answered prayer. So don’t give up when you pray—God is listening, just like He heard Hannah (1 Samuel 1:20).
✅ 2. Be available to God, even from your youth
God speaks to those who listen. If you make yourself available, God can use you—no matter your age or background.
✅ 3. Stand for righteousness
Even when the whole nation wanted to turn away, Samuel stayed faithful. May God give us boldness like that.
✅ 4. Integrity is greater than popularity
Samuel wasn’t interested in pleasing people—he lived to please God. That’s why God honored him, and the people respected him.
✅ 5. God backs up His faithful servants
When Samuel prayed, heaven responded. When he spoke, God confirmed his words. Why? Because he was faithful (1 Samuel 3:19).
✅ 6. There’s a day of accountability
Samuel reminded Israel to live right, and even when he was old, he didn’t stop pointing people back to God. One day, we all will give account to God—so let’s live prepared (Romans 14:12).
✅ 7. God rewards those who honour Him
Look at how God used Samuel—from birth to death, he remained relevant. That’s what happens when we live a life surrendered to God.
Memory Verse Recap
Let’s all say it together:
“And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.” – 1 Samuel 3:19
That means everything Samuel said—God made it happen. May your words be filled with power like Samuel’s, in Jesus’ name.
Conclusion:
Dear brothers and sisters, God is still looking for Samuels—men and women who are willing, obedient, humble, bold, and prayerful. If you make yourself available, God will use you for His glory. Remember, greatness in the Kingdom doesn’t begin with position—it begins with submission. May God find you faithful, just like Samuel. Amen!
